protocol-reverse-engineering
Master network protocol reverse engineering including packet analysis
by wshobsonFree
Description
protocol-reverse-engineering is an agent skill from the wshobson/agents collection for understanding network protocols by capturing and analyzing their traffic. It covers the techniques for security research, interoperability and debugging: capturing packets from a network interface with Wireshark or tshark, filtering a capture to the traffic of interest, saving captures to files for later analysis, dissecting the structure of messages, and writing up a custom protocol so others can implement or check against it. The skill's capture examples show how to listen on a specific interface, apply a filter such as a port, and write the capture to a file. It is useful when a team needs to work with a protocol that has no published specification, such as a device or internal service, or when it needs to debug an interaction between two systems that do not behave as expected. The skill is for analysis of traffic that you own or are authorized to examine, such as your own services, devices or lab setups. Capturing network traffic can expose sensitive data, so captures should be handled and stored under your organization's policies. The skill is installed with the skills CLI from the wshobson/agents repository. Its skills.sh page showed about 12.3K installs, with Gen Agent Trust Hub and Snyk passing and Socket showing a warning at the time of the scan.…

protocol-reverse-engineering FAQ
What tools does it use?
Wireshark and tshark for capturing and analyzing network traffic.
What is it for?
Security research, interoperability and debugging, especially for protocols that have no published specification.
Which traffic should I capture?
Traffic you own or are authorized to examine, such as your own services, devices or lab setups.
Are captures sensitive?
They can expose sensitive data, so store and handle them under your organization's policies.
How do I install it?
Run npx skills add https://github.com/wshobson/agents --skill protocol-reverse-engineering.
What security audits does it have?
skills.sh lists three audits: Gen Agent Trust Hub Pass, Socket Warn and Snyk Pass. A Warn or Fail is worth reading before you install.
