About copilot-sdk

C

copilot-sdk

Programmatic agent runtime

copilot-sdk is an agent skill from the github/awesome-copilot collection for building applications that embed GitHub Copilot's agentic workflows. The GitHub Copilot SDK exposes the same production agent runtime that powers the Copilot CLI, so an application can invoke it programmatically rather than building its own orchestration. The developer defines the agent's behavior and the runtime handles planning, tool invocation and file edits. The SDK is available in Python, TypeScript, Go and .NET, and it supports streaming responses, custom tool definitions and multi-turn conversations. The skill's prerequisites are GitHub Copilot access and an authenticated environment, plus a language runtime: Node.js 20.19 or 22.12 or later for TypeScript, Python 3.11 or later, Go 1.24 or later, or a .NET Standard 2.0 compatible implementation. The Go SDK needs the GitHub Copilot CLI installed and authenticated, while the TypeScript, Python and .NET packages bundle a runtime and do not need a separate CLI. The skill covers installation, creating agents and custom tools, and streaming. It is useful for teams building an assistant or automation inside their own product that should use Copilot's agent capabilities. Because the agent can edit files and call tools, the permissions it is given should be limited to what the application needs. The skill is installed with the skills CLI from the github/awesome-copilot repository. Its skills.sh page showed about 9.4K installs and passing results from three security audits at the time of the scan.
