About create-agentsmd

C

create-agentsmd

Generates standardized AGENTS.md files to help AI coding agents understand

create-agentsmd is an agent skill from the github/awesome-copilot collection that creates an AGENTS.md file at the root of a repository, following the public guidance at agents.md. AGENTS.md is an open Markdown format that works as a README for coding agents: it gives them the context and instructions they need to work on the project, such as the technical setup, the workflow and the testing commands. It complements the README rather than replacing it, because it holds detailed technical context that would clutter a file meant for people. The skill's principles are that the file is written for automated tools, that it sits at the repository root or at the roots of subprojects in a monorepo, and that it uses standard Markdown with a flexible structure. The format is supported by more than twenty AI coding tools and agents, which is why the skill is useful across tools. The agent examines the repository and writes the file from what it finds, so the setup and test commands must be verified, not assumed. A wrong command in AGENTS.md will mislead every agent that reads it, so the maintainers should run the commands listed and correct the file. The skill is installed with the skills CLI from the github/awesome-copilot repository. Its skills.sh page showed about 13.0K installs and passing results from three security audits at the time of the scan.
