Comprehensive guide for configuring and managing GitHub Dependabot

dependabot is an agent skill from the github/awesome-copilot collection that guides the configuration and management of GitHub Dependabot, the built-in dependency tool. It has three capabilities: alerts, which notify when a dependency has a known vulnerability; security updates, which open pull requests to fix vulnerable dependencies; and version updates, which open pull requests to keep dependencies current. All of this is configured in one file, .github/dependabot.yml on the default branch, since GitHub does not support several such files in one repository. The skill follows a configuration workflow that starts by detecting every ecosystem in the repository, meaning every kind of dependency manifest the project uses, and then writes or improves the configuration so each ecosystem is covered with the right schedule, grouping and limits. It is useful for teams whose repositories have several languages or several package folders and who want dependency updates managed consistently. Automatic pull requests can flood a repository if they are not limited, so the skill's settings for schedules and open pull request limits should be set deliberately. Updates should still be tested before they are merged. The skill is installed with the skills CLI from the github/awesome-copilot repository. Its skills.sh page showed about 4.4K installs and passing results from three security audits at the time of the scan.
