About deprecation-and-migration

D

deprecation-and-migration

Manages deprecation and migration

deprecation-and-migration is an agent skill from Addy Osmani's agent-skills collection for removing old systems, APIs and features, and for moving users safely from an old implementation to a new one. Its starting point is that code is a liability: every line costs maintenance in bugs, dependency updates, security patches and onboarding. Deprecation is the discipline of removing code that no longer earns its keep, and migration is the process of moving the people who depend on it. The skill notes that most engineering organizations are good at building things and few are good at removing them. It applies when replacing an old system, API or library with a new one, sunsetting a feature that is no longer needed, consolidating duplicate implementations, removing dead code that nobody owns but everybody depends on, planning the lifecycle of a new system, and deciding whether to keep maintaining a legacy system or invest in migrating it. The skill is listed on skills.sh, with its security audit results shown there.
