About observability-and-instrumentation

observability-and-instrumentation
Instruments code so production behavior is visible and diagnosable
observability-and-instrumentation is an agent skill from Addy Osmani's agent-skills collection that makes code's production behavior visible and diagnosable. Observability is the ability to answer what the system is doing and why, from the outside, using the telemetry the code emits. The skill's principle is that instrumentation is not an add-on after launch. It is written alongside the feature, the same way tests are, because if a feature ships without telemetry, the first bug a user reports becomes archaeology instead of a query. The skill applies when building any feature that will run in production, adding a service, endpoint, background job or external integration, when a production incident took too long to diagnose, when setting up or reviewing alerting rules, and when reviewing a pull request that adds I/O, retries, queues or cross-service calls. It names three things it does not cover: diagnosing a failure that is happening now, which belongs to the debugging skill; profiling and optimizing measured slowness, which belongs to the performance skill; and launch-day monitoring checklists and rollback triggers, which belong to the shipping-and-launch skill.
