About openspec-explore

O

openspec-explore

Enter OpenSpec explore mode

openspec-explore is an agent skill from the OpenSpec project that puts the assistant in an explore mode, where it works as a thinking partner for exploring ideas, investigating problems and clarifying requirements in a project that uses OpenSpec. The skill is explicit that explore mode is for thinking, not implementing. It may read files, search the code and run read-only commands, but it does not write code or build features. If you ask for an implementation, it tells you that explore mode does not implement, and points you to the propose skill, which turns the discussion into a change that is then worked from. It can create or update OpenSpec change artifacts such as proposals, designs and specs when you confirm the scope, because capturing the thinking is not the same as implementing it. The skill is careful about permission: answering a design question is never consent to write, so before the first write it names the files it would change, asks a yes or no question, and waits for your reply in a separate message. An explicit request to capture the exploration as a new change counts as confirmation for that change. It has no fixed steps, and it suits the early stage of a feature, when the requirements are still forming.
