About Photocraft
Photocraft
An open-source, photo editor written by scratch in pure Rust
PhotoCraft is an open-source image editor, written from scratch in pure Rust as a clean-room reimplementation of the workflow of Adobe Photoshop. It supports layers, masks, adjustment layers, layer styles, type, vectors and brushes, and it reads and writes real layered PSD files, which the project says keep the render of 307 of the 309 psd-tools test files when re-saved. The app is native, with a GPU compositor built on wgpu that uses Metal, Vulkan, DX12 or WebGPU, copy-on-write tiles and multithreaded filters, and it runs without Electron or a web view. Its menus, panels and shortcuts follow Photoshop's layout, so people who know Photoshop can find their way around. Adjustment layers keep edits live and can be masked and reordered, and the project lists 16 adjustment layers, including Curves, Levels with a live histogram, Channel Mixer, Gradient Map and Color Lookup for .cube, .3dl and .look files. Layer styles include drop shadows, glows, bevel, stroke and gradient overlays, live on any layer including type. Every action is a command, so the same engine can be driven from the interface, a command-line tool, a JSON control channel or an MCP server. It is part of the ArtCraft community of creative apps and runs offline. The repository's screenshots show the app working on public-domain artwork.
