About refactor-plan

refactor-plan
Detailed multi-file refactor planning with safety checks and rollback guidance
refactor-plan is an agent skill from the github/awesome-copilot collection that produces a detailed plan for a multi-file refactor before any code is changed. Its core rule is that it never edits files while planning. It searches the codebase to understand the current state, reading enough of the implementation, the tests, the configuration and the documentation to make the plan specific to the repository. It identifies the affected files, the ownership boundaries between them, the dependencies, and any hidden coupling that a simple search would miss. The changes are sequenced to be safe: contracts and types first, then implementations, then the callers that use them, then tests, then cleanup, with verification steps between phases and a final validation command. The riskiest phases come with rollback or recovery steps. The skill then stops and asks for confirmation before any implementation begins, even if the user asked for the change, and it asks clarifying questions instead of guessing when the request is too ambiguous to plan safely. It is useful for engineers who need to change a widely used interface and want to see the scope and the order before committing to it. A plan is only as good as the reading behind it, so the people who own the affected code should review it before the work starts. The skill is installed with the skills CLI from the github/awesome-copilot repository. Its skills.sh page showed about 12.9K installs and passing results from three security audits at the time of the scan.
