system-design

Design systems, services, and architectures

System-design is an agent skill for designing systems, services and architectures, and for evaluating the architectural decisions behind them. It follows a framework that begins with requirements gathering. Functional requirements describe what the system does, non-functional requirements cover scale, latency, availability and cost, and constraints record the team size, the timeline and the existing tech stack. The high-level design step then lays out the component diagram, the data flow, the API contracts and the storage choices. The skill is triggered by questions such as design a system for, how should we architect, or what is the right architecture. It is meant for engineers and tech leads who need to think a design through before building it, and it helps keep the constraints visible so the design fits the team it is for. The skill is part of Anthropic's knowledge-work plugins, and it works alongside the architecture skill, which records the final decisions as architecture decision records.
