winmd-api-search

Find and explore Windows desktop APIs

winmd-api-search is an agent skill from the github/awesome-copilot collection that helps a developer find the right Windows API for a capability and get its full details. It searches a local cache of Windows metadata, which is built from the Windows Platform SDK's Windows.* WinRT APIs, from WinAppSDK and WinUI bundled as a baseline, from NuGet packages in restored projects that ship WinMD files, and from class libraries in the project that produce WinMD as build output. The skill notes that even on a fresh clone with no restore or build step, the platform SDK and WinAppSDK coverage is available. It is useful when building a feature that needs a platform capability such as the camera, file access, notifications, sensors or AI, when a developer asks how to do something that involves a platform feature, when the exact methods, properties, events or enumeration values of a type are needed before writing code, and when it is not clear which control or interface suits a user interface or system task. The skill reads API metadata and does not change the project, so its results still need to be compiled and tested against the target Windows version. The skill is installed with the skills CLI from the github/awesome-copilot repository. Its skills.sh page showed about 5.7K installs and passing results from three security audits at the time of the scan.
