About convert-documents-to-markdown

convert-documents-to-markdown

Convert Word (.doc, .docx), PowerPoint (.ppt, .pptx), Excel

Convert documents to Markdown is an agent skill that turns office and document files into GitHub-flavored Markdown with the anydoc command-line tool. It accepts Word documents in .doc, .docx, .docm, .odt and .rtf, presentations in .ppt, .pptx, .odp and related formats, spreadsheets in .xls, .xlsx, .xlsb, .ods and .csv, EPUB books, and PDFs. The file format is detected from its content, so you usually do not need to name the format. The tool runs with npx and Node 20 or later, needs no separate install, and can write to standard output or to a file. For large documents, the skill advises writing to a file and reading only the parts you need, rather than loading everything into the agent's context. Scanned and image-only pages need optical character recognition, which anydoc does not do itself. In that case it exits with code 3, and you can rerun it with the hosted option to send the document to Firecrawl Parse. No signup is needed for the basic use, and an API key can be passed for higher limits. Inside a Node, Python or Rust project, the skill recommends the library rather than shelling out, with packages on npm, PyPI and crates.io exposing the same conversion function. Exit codes distinguish success, a failed conversion and a usage error. The skill is listed on skills.sh under the Firecrawl anydoc repository, which has about 22.9K stars, and it shows Gen Agent Trust Hub: Pass, Socket: Pass and Snyk: Pass.
