About convex-migrate-rehearse

C

convex-migrate-rehearse

Rehearse a live-app schema change + backfill on a snapshot-seeded preview

convex-migrate-rehearse is an agent skill that rehearses a schema change and its data backfill on a preview deployment before the change is made to production. A Convex schema push checks every existing document against the new schema and fails the push if any row does not conform, which is a useful gate. The safe way to use that gate is to let it fail on a rehearsal copy rather than on production. The skill turns a preview deployment into that copy by seeding it with a production snapshot, pushing the new schema, running the backfill, and watching the gate. Only when the rehearsal is green does it promote the change to production, using the snapshot as a safety net. It combines the deploy guard, which classifies the target, the optional-then-required migration pattern, and the @convex-dev/migrations package for a batched and resumable backfill. Preview deployments need a Preview Deploy Key, which the skill explains how to obtain from the dashboard, and the feature is available on paid plans. If no preview key is available, the skill falls back to rehearsing on your personal development deployment and says so. It is part of the get-convex agent-skills repository and is added to a compatible agent with the skills command.
