About markitdown

markitdown
Converts heterogeneous documents and selected URIs to Markdown
markitdown is an agent skill for converting many kinds of documents, and selected web addresses, into Markdown with Microsoft's MarkItDown tool. It is for text analysis, search, and feeding language models or retrieval systems. The skill explains safe local conversion and offers a choice of path for each job. The output is designed mainly for indexing, text analysis, search and language model ingestion, not for high-fidelity visual reproduction of a page or a document layout. The skill targets MarkItDown 0.1.8, released on 21 September 2026. For new code, it says to use the markdown property of the result. The text_content property still works but is only a soft-deprecated compatibility alias. Use it when you want clean, structured text from a PDF, Word file, spreadsheet or similar input so that an agent can read it or search it. It is part of the k-dense-ai scientific agent skills repository on GitHub, which has about 49,600 stars. The listing shows it as free, and it has about 2,000 installs. Its security audits show passes from Gen Agent Trust Hub and Socket, with a warning from Snyk.
