About openai/doc

openai/doc

Read, create, and edit .docx documents with formatting and layout fidelity

doc is an agent skill from OpenAI's curated skills collection for reading, creating and editing Word .docx documents where formatting and layout matter. It uses python-docx for structured edits and a render pipeline built on LibreOffice and Poppler to produce images of the pages, so the assistant can inspect the layout visually before a document is delivered. That check catches the defects that only show up in print or PDF export, such as broken tables, clipped text and pagination problems. It is for situations where editing a .docx by hand risks silent breaks: reading a document whose tables or diagrams carry layout meaning, generating a formatted report from structured data with consistent headings and styles, editing an existing contract or proposal without disturbing its original formatting, validating a client document visually before it is sent, and converting a document to PDF to spot-check each page. The skill renders and inspects the document after each meaningful change, which is its main safeguard. Because the render step needs LibreOffice and Poppler on the machine, check that they are available before you rely on the visual check. The skill is listed on officialskills.sh and installs from the openai/skills repository. Install it with npx skills add https://github.com/openai/skills --skill doc.
