About read-arxiv-paper

R

read-arxiv-paper

Asked to read an arxiv paper given an arxiv URL

read-arxiv-paper is an agent skill from the nanochat project by Andrej Karpathy for reading an arXiv paper from its URL. It tells the assistant to fetch the paper's TeX source rather than its PDF, since the source gives the full text and the equations in a form that is easier to read. It first normalizes the link, changing an abstract URL into the source URL by inserting the /src/ path, then downloads the source archive to a local cache folder, named after the arXiv ID, and unpacks it there. If the archive is already cached, it does not download it again. The skill is useful when you want an assistant to summarize a research paper, answer questions about its method, or check a claim against the paper's own text, and the source route keeps the mathematics intact. It only works with arXiv links, and it depends on arXiv making the source available for that paper. Downloading and unpacking files from the web should be done with care, so the skill keeps the archive in its own cache folder rather than in the working project. The skill passes Gen Agent Trust Hub and Socket on skills.sh, and Snyk shows a warning. It has about 2,800 installs.
