About repo-story-time

repo-story-time

Generate a comprehensive repository summary and narrative story

repo-story-time is an agent skill from the github/awesome-copilot collection that produces a summary of a repository and a narrative of how it came to be, from its commit history. The agent acts as a technical analyst who examines the repository the way an archaeologist would, looking for the patterns in the code and the story the commits tell. It writes two files into the repository root: REPOSITORY_SUMMARY.md, which describes the technical architecture and purpose, and THE_STORY_OF_THIS_REPO.md, which tells the history of the project from its commits. The skill starts by running the commands that reveal the repository's structure and purpose, then analyzes the history, and it writes the documents rather than pasting them into the chat. It is useful for onboarding a new contributor to a project with a long history, or for writing a retrospective. The narrative reflects what the commits say, which may be incomplete or terse, so it is a reading of the history rather than a record of it, and the maintainers should check the story against what they know. Because the skill writes files into the repository, the changes should be reviewed and kept out of commits that are meant for code alone. The skill is installed with the skills CLI from the github/awesome-copilot repository. Its skills.sh page showed about 8.9K installs and passing results from three security audits at the time of the scan.
