About org-planning

org-planning
Headcount planning, org design, and team structure optimization
org-planning is a skill from Anthropic's knowledge-work plugins, listed on skills.sh. It helps plan an organisation's structure, headcount and team design. It is triggered by phrases such as org planning, headcount plan, team structure, reorg, or who should we hire. It covers four planning dimensions: how many people are needed in which roles and by when; the structure, including reporting lines, span of control and team boundaries; the sequencing, which asks which hires matter most and in what order; and the budget, with headcount cost modelling and the trade-offs. The skill also gives healthy benchmarks for an organisation. A span of control of five to eight direct reports is healthy, and fewer than three or more than twelve is a warning sign. Team sizes of five to nine are healthy, and an individual-contributor to manager ratio below four to one suggests the organisation is top-heavy. It suits leaders planning a hiring round or a reorganisation who want to test the design against sound ratios.
