Lead through MITRE Problem Framing: Look Inward, Outward, and Reframe
by deanpetersFree
Description
problem-framing-canvas is an interactive skill that guides a team through MITRE's Problem Framing Canvas. The process has three phases. Look Inward examines your own assumptions and biases. Look Outward examines who experiences the problem and who does not. Reframe synthesizes the insights into an actionable problem statement and a How Might We question. Working through these phases is meant to make sure you solve the right problem before you jump to a solution, and to guard against confirmation bias, overlooked stakeholders and solution-first thinking. The skill is useful for clarifying a messy problem before solutioning, surfacing assumptions and overlooked stakeholders, and producing a bias-resistant problem statement in a workshop. Example requests include framing a mobile retention issue, reframing a stakeholder request before anything is built, and writing a clearer problem statement for onboarding drop-off. You pass the problem area as the argument. The estimated session is 30 to 45 minutes, and the skill sits in the discovery and research theme of the product-manager-skills repository on GitHub.…
